Why you should learn about the 80/20 principle and how to implement it in your life

Posted on July 28, 2025January 13, 2026 by amairaanand12@gmail.com

If you ever feel like you’re studying for hours and still getting average results… this is for you.

What if I told you that 80% of your results come from just 20% of your efforts?
That’s the 80/20 Principle. And once you understand it, it can change how you study, how you spend your time, and how you live.

Here is how to actually take advantage of it and use it in your everyday life.

So what is the 80/20 principle?

Also called the Pareto Principle, it says that:

80% of the outcomes come from 20% of the inputs.

Examples:

  • 80% of your test score comes from 20% of what you revise.
  • 80% of your stress comes from 20% of your tasks.
  • 80% of your happiness comes from 20% of your friends.

It’s not always exactly 80/20, but the point is:
A small part of what you do leads to most of your results.

Because school is literally a time management and energy game.

Here’s what the 80/20 Principle helps you do:

  • Stop wasting time on what doesn’t move the needle.
  • Study smarter, not longer.
  • Prioritise what actually matters.
  • Get better grades with less burnout.
  • Have more free time for stuff you care about (or just sleep tbh).

How to Use 80/20 as a Student

1. Study Only What Gives You Marks

Look at your past tests and ask:

  • What topics or question types always come up?
  • What mistakes do I keep making?

Focus 80% of your study time on those key areas.
Don’t get lost revising obscure stuff that barely shows up.

Example:
In Maths, 80% of your score may come from algebra and geometry – not the one lesson on number bases.

2. Do the 20% of Work That Matters Most

Not all tasks are equal.

  • Making flashcards = high-value
  • Rewriting your notes in fancy colours = low-value
  • Practising past papers = high-value
  • Watching a 2-hour video without taking notes = low-value

Ask: “Is this task directly helping me get the result I want?

3. Time-Block the 20% First

Use your planner (Notion, Google Calendar, paper – whatever) to:

Block time for your high-impact tasks first
Then add the small stuff if there’s time

This way, the “20%” always gets done – and that’s what moves the needle.

4. Identify Your Top 20% Energy Drainers

What’s killing your energy and productivity?

  • That one toxic group chat?
  • Scrolling TikTok before you even get out of bed?
  • Cramming every night?

Cut or reduce those energy-drainers.
Focus on the 20% of habits that actually keep you focused and happy (sleep, good food, deep work sprints, breaks).

5. Level Up the 20% That Works

What’s already working for you?

  • A study method that gets results fast
  • A subject you’re naturally good at
  • A time of day when you’re focused

Do more of that. Don’t just fix weaknesses – double down on strengths.

Some 80/20 Examples for Teens:

Situation80/20 Version
StudyingFocus on topics that show up most often
FriendsSpend time with the few who energise you
Side hustlesFocus on the few things that bring the most results
Social mediaFollow the few accounts that teach or inspire you
HabitsKeep the habits that give you the biggest energy boost

Summary:

The 80/20 Principle isn’t about doing less – it’s about doing what matters most.
Once you start seeing it everywhere (in your time, grades, friendships, energy), your entire life gets clearer.

You’ll:

  • Work smarter
  • Stress less
  • Actually enjoy more of your time

So in conclusion, you don’t need to do everything. You need to do the right things.
